EMPLOYEE SAFETY

Everyone has the right to go home safely, and we believe all injuries are preventable. Together we make this happen, and abide by the following safety principles:

  • Each person is responsible for acting safely without creating risk to themselves or others.
  • Management at all levels is responsible and accountable for workplace health and safety.
  • Ongoing safety training is essential.
  • Consultation and engagement with all who work in, or with our business, is fundamental to improving safety.

Sands requires all employees to report any incident to their supervisor and the OHS Manager immediately including:

  • Hazards
  • Near misses
  • Motor vehicle incidents
  • Injuries
  • Property damage
  • Environmental

As a Sands Fridge Lines core value, safety is at the heart of everything we do.

We take pride in maintaining an excellent safety record and strive to improve our safety practices throughout the business on a regular basis. Numerous safety accreditations, along with a strong focus on training and ongoing management, ensures that sound risk mitigation practices are always in place.

Vehicle Safety

Sands has been accredited in the Heavy Vehicle Operations (HVO) since its introduction by Worksafe in 2003. This is for the safe management of driver fatigue and maintenance of trucks and trailers.

All Sands drivers, including sub-contractors, are required to follow fatigue management requirements as per the Occupational Health and Safety act. This includes documenting all driving, work and rest hours for every day.

To maintain our accreditation, we have four quarterly internal audits for fatigue and maintenance management, and an annual external audit on drivers, documentation, systems, training and maintenance of vehicles.

Recruitment and Induction

Sands has a highly structured recruitment process to ensure that we take on new team members who are the best possible fit. Recruitment consists of interviews, reference checks, driver assessments for truck drivers and operator assessments for forklift operators. The final step is a pre-employment medical, which includes musculoskeletal assessments and drug and alcohol testing.

Sands requires all new employees to complete an induction, which includes a review of site requirements, policies and procedures, incident reporting processes, manual handling training, fatigue management, and equipment training.

All new truck drivers are paired with an experienced Sands driver, who guides them through internal processes and customer familiarisation.
